Gratitude Opens the Heart to the Divine
Message from Ascended Master Paramahansa Yogananda
There was a time during my life that I faced great adversity in maintaining the organization that was to be known as the Self Realization Fellowship. It was during the Great Depression and the ability to remain solvent became a challenge to the point where we had trouble receiving enough food to make our meals.
In this situation it would have been easy for the monks and myself to lapse into a state of despair or anger or ingratitude like children who have not received their expected candy.
Instead we prayed and turned toward God and we asked for miracles. What we received was Divine Inspiration. What we received was information regarding how to adequately feed our group with a balanced vegetarian meal that provided for all our needs. This inspiration came to us with startlingly insights and visions of what we must do.
We followed those insights and visions and we survived and thrived through those lean times.
Throughout those times of adversity, we never lapsed into despair or bitterness. We never allowed our expectations of what a miracle should look like cloud our thankfulness and gratitude for the key information that we received.
So how did we do this? How did we ride out the most fearful economic disaster of the century without sinking into fear, hatred and despair?
This is our practical advice for you today.
We expressed thanks and gratefulness throughout our day for what we had and for the small miracles that would manifest. If one of us suddenly received an unexpected stipend and shared with the group, each one of us would pray to God in thanks and gratitude for the miracle.
When I would wake up in the morning, I would spend at least five minutes listing the things that I was grateful for and thanking God with all my heart. When we had our meager meals, we joined together in gratitude and thanks for what we had. Many of us would make it a point to offer prayers of thanks for the weather, for our living quarters, for our good fortune for being alive. We kept the momentum of gratitude going throughout the day and a wonderful transformation occurred - we became happier and more heart-felt in our interactions with each other.
You see, gratitude toward life and one another brings forth Divine Love from the Heart.
I invite you to try this for a month and feel the difference. If you find your self happier and more loving, consider making this a permanent habit.
